VIDEO: David Aldridge talks unrestricted free agents

NEWS OF THE MORNING

No. 1: Report: Aldridge's meeting with Lakers goes 'really well' The NBA's free agency period opened last night with the usual — a lot of talk, a handful of moves and a stage set for an even bigger Day 2 of the chatter. LaMarcus Aldridge of the Trail Blazers is the No. 1 target, of course, and met with the Los Angeles Lakers last night and, according to ESPN.com, the report went as well as it could for both sides:

The Los Angeles Lakers were the first to sit down with LaMarcus Aldridge when free agency opened Tuesday night, and their meeting lasted nearly two hours, sources told ESPN.com.

The meeting went "really well," a source who was in the room for the Lakers' presentation told ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne.

"LaMarcus seemed completely focused," a source told Shelburne.

The Lakers' contingent included Kobe Bryant, president Jeanie Buss and general managerMitch Kupchak.

The Houston Rockets met with Aldridge after the Lakers.

Aldridge also will meet with the San Antonio Spurs, Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors on Wednesday and with the New York Knicks on Thursday, league sources told ESPN.com.

According to one source, the chance of Aldridge staying with the Portland Trail Blazers is "very unlikely."

ESPN.com reported in May that the Spurs and Mavericks strongly believe they'll have a great shot to lure Aldridge back to his home state of Texas. But sources said last week that Aldridge is actually thinking more and more about a free-agent jump to the Lakers.

The Lakers, sources added, firmly believe they will now be in the Aldridge hunt. And there is a rising sentiment, sources said, that the Lakers have edged past the Mavericks on Aldridge's wish list even though he was a high school star in Dallas.

The Spurs, sources say, continue to be Aldridge's most likely destination if he goes through with the idea of leaving the Blazers to start anew.

No. 2: Kings set sights on Lin, Rondo: Last summer the Kings' big free agent move was to sign a point guard (Darren Collison) in hopes of shoring up their offense with a steady hand. So, then, why would they be looking at two other point guards this summer? Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee explains that the Kings aren't looking to replace Collison but, rather, pair him with another playmaker:

When free agency began at 9:01 p.m. PST, all signs indicated the Kings are looking to address the need for another point guard.

Pursuing another point guard is not an indictment on Darren Collison, rather a nod to coach George Karl's desire to be able to play two of them together. Collison and Ray McCallum are the Kings' only point guards under contract.

Rajon Rondo and Jeremy Lin are among free agents who could fit Karl's style and be affordable for the Kings, who will have about $10 million to spend.

Rondo is the name to watch. The Kings are definitely interested, and it is believed Rondo would entertain signing with Sacramento.

A four-time All-Star with Boston, Rondo was traded to Dallas last season, a tumultuous one in which he clashed with coach Rick Carlisle.

Rondo to Sacramento has been rumored for years, but the timing might be right for a pairing. Rondo, 29, needs a chance to rebuild his image and the Kings need help at point guard.

Rondo tore his ACL in January 2013 and is looking to prove he's still an elite court leader and can be the menacing defender that made him key to Boston's success.

Other possible targets include combo guards such as Monta Ellis, Lou Williams and Rodney Stuckey. The Kings would like to get more out of their shooting guards, and they may not have the patience to wait for Ben McLemore and Nik Stauskas to develop.

The Kings could opt to find guard help via trade and look for wing help in free agency. Players the Kings could afford include DeMarre Carroll or a bargain like Gigi Datome. Re-signing Omri Casspi is a strong possibility, too.

Casspi played well under Karl and is liked by teammates.

The Kings want three-point shooting and defense from the small forward spot to go along with Rudy Gay, who will also play some power forward.

No. 3: Report: Lakers plan meeting with Love — The Los Angeles Lakers are flush with salary cap space this summer and aren't holding back on chasing the big fish in the market. They've already had a chat with the No. 1 target of the summer, LaMarcus Aldridge, and according to ESPN.com's Chris Broussard, have a meeting planned with another top target — Kevin Love:

The Los Angeles Lakers will meet with free agent Kevin Love later this week, according to league sources.

One source said the Lakers have heard Love is likely to re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but they still want to sit down with him. The meeting will be part of a busy week for the Lakers, who also will meet with LaMarcus Aldridge, DeAndre Jordan and Greg Monroe.

Besides securing a top-flight power forward in Aldridge or Love, the Lakers hope to add a center. In addition to Jordan and Monroe, the Lakers have interest in Tyson Chandler and Robin Lopez, Aldridge's teammate in Portland the past two seasons, sources said.

The Lakers also will place a call to Marc Gasol, though the All-Star center is widely expected to re-sign with Memphis.

The Lakers cannot clear enough cap room to sign two max-salaried players.

The Lakers' pitch to top-shelf free agents, including Love, will focus on the chance to be a star on the league's glamour team, the opportunity for global exposure, and the fact that the Lakers have enough cap room going forward to add stars and complementary talent next summer, one source said.

No. 4: Report: Cavs reach out to Prince; Williams hoping for return — It became painfully obvious to even the most casual NBA observer that the Cleveland Cavaliers had a shortage of healthy bodies and depth when they played the Golden State Warriors in The Finals. As such, the team is doing what it can to rectify that problem despite not having a ton of salary cap space (provided LeBron James and Kevin Love return). According to Chris Haynes of the Northeast Ohio News Group, the Cavs have reached out to Tayshaun Prince and former guard Mo Williams is hoping for a return.

Here's his report on Prince:

In an effort to shore up wing depth, the Cleveland Cavaliers have reached out to the representatives of free agent small forward Tayshaun Prince, league sources informed Northeast Ohio Media Group.

With the free-agency period beginning, conversations up to this point have been described as exploratory, sources say.

Prince, 35, played for Memphis, Boston, and Detroit last season and averaged 7.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and shot 46 percent from long distance.

The 6-9 wiry forward is still a defensive presence on the perimeter and would serve as a replacement to Shawn Marion who never made an impact on the court in his final season in the league.

And here's his report on Williams:

Sources close to the free agent point guard Mo Williams say they expect a meeting with the Cleveland Cavaliers during the free-agency period.

The interest is apparently mutual. Cleveland is "very interested" in Williams returning to Northeast Ohio, I've been informed. All the Cavaliers can offer is the taxpayer mid-level exception, which pays approximately $3.4 million. Williams is coming off a one-year, $3.7 million deal.

The Cavaliers monitored Williams' situation last season when he was a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves. If he was able to negotiate a buyout, the Cavaliers notified his camp of their intentions to pursue him.

No. 5: Report: Ellis, Pacers nearing deal — Few players in the NBA can go off and get buckets in bunches like Monta Ellis. Few teams in the NBA have struggled to just get buckets at times like the Indiana Pacers have the last few seasons. It's no surprise, then, that Indiana went hard after Ellis and, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, are close to getting him in the fold:

Free-agent guard Monta Ellis is engaged in serious talks on a possible three-year, $32 million-plus deal with the Indiana Pacers, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Ellis has a scheduled trip into Indianapolis on Wednesday to meet with the Pacers' front-office and coaching staffs, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Indiana president Larry Bird and coach Frank Vogel want to play smaller and faster next season, and luring Ellis is an important part of the Pacers' plan. Ellis, 29, has played the past two seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, averaging 18.9 points and 4.1 assists last season.
